Fairfax County to Host Information Sessions to Discuss Future Ownership of the I-95 Waste-to-Energy Facility

The Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program will participate in a series of Information Sessions to discuss the county’s options for the future ownership of the I-95 waste-to-energy facility. The series will kick off on Thursday, Jan. 27 and include the following meetings:

  • Thursday, Jan. 27 – 7 p.m. at South County Secondary School (8501 Silverbrook Road, Lorton).
  • Monday, Jan. 31 – 7 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center (12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax) in conference room 2 & 3.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 1 – 7 p.m. at the North County Governmental Center (12000 Bowman Towne Drive, Reston) in the Community Room.
  • Fairfax County is considering the purchase of the I-95 Waste-to-Energy Facility as the best available option for the future of the county’s waste disposal system.

The I-95 Waste-to-Energy Facility has been the primary waste disposal facility in Fairfax County since 1990. The facility is currently owned and operated by Covanta Fairfax, Inc. The county has a contract with Covanta that expires in 2016 to dispose of waste generated in Fairfax County. Terms of the contract include an option for Fairfax County to purchase the facility. This option has a deadline of March 3 for the county to take action.
