County Extends Transportation Funding Survey

How do you think a a $3 billion transportation shortfall should be funded?

Fairfax County residents will have a few extra days to let know officials know how they think a $3 billion transportation shortfall should be fixed.

The county’s online survey was originally scheduled to close at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 12. It will now close at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 15.

County officials need the public’s opinion on how to address a massive lack of transportation dollars in the future – about $300,000 a year for the next 10 years. The federal and Virginia governments currently don’t have money to help the situation.

Officials have outlined 20 potential options to increase revenues for transportation infrastructure, including a 1 percent sales tax on services and a .5 percent income tax.

The county is also in the process of hosting a series of meetings for the public. Click here to find the outreach meeting closest to you.

With a 3 Billion dollar funding gap to fill, it's definitely time to think about the cost of the Silver Line. Up until now, few people seemed to care whether the cost of that line was reasonable or ridiculous; the spotlight was on the story of the treasure chest of all of the high paying jobs that would simply make money fall from the sky. But now that the reality of sequestration and lost funding are beginning to hit home, and now that the Toll Road tolls are about to begin their skyrocket climb, people might start to think about getting a better deal than the near double prices we have been handed. Our leaders should say how they are going to make sure that MWAA does not sign us into contracts at near double prices for Phase II of this rail line - it will be plenty expensive enough, even if we get a 50% discount. http://www.bruhns.us/civic/DullesRail/Dulles-Rail---Silver-Line-overcost-report---Bruhns.pdf
