UPDATE: Fire Started in Garage Trash Can at Lorton Townhouse

Three adults and four children were displaced.

An unidentified source in a trash can caused Monday's townhouse fire at 9667 Potters Hill Circle in Lorton, according to a news release from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

According to the incident commander, the fire was accidental. Sounding smoke alarms provided early warning for the occupants, and all escaped unharmed.

The early morning fire displaced three adults and four children, and one Fairfax County firefighter was injured in the blaze and was transported to the Inova Lorton Healthplex with non-life threatening injuries, according to the department news release.

The garage sustained the brunt of the damage in the three-level town home, with damage estimated at $150,000. A car inside the garage was also destroyed. 

Firefighters were on the scene in minutes and they took approximately 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Several neighboring homes received light smoke damage but were able to reoccupy their homes after firefighters ventilated them.
