Police to Crack Down on Aggressive Driving

Fairfax County Police Department's campaign Operation Summer HEAT will target aggressive drivers during the next three months

Fairfax County Police will be cracking down on aggressive driving this summer.

The new safety campaign Operation Summer HEAT (Help Eliminate Aggressive Driving) will run from Friday through Sept. 3, according to a Fairfax County Police Department press release. Officers will be specifically looking for violations such as reckless driving, speeding, improper passing, failure to obey stop lights and signs and following too closely.

“Clearly, motorists in Fairfax County have very busy lives and are often frustrated with heavy traffic,” Capt. Susan Culin, commander of the Traffic Division, said.

The program will have three segments with major enforcement waves in June, July and August. Some police cruisers will also have Summer HEAT magnets on them to remind drivers to practice safe driving habits.

This program is being instituted after a rise in the number of tickets written for safety violations between 2010 and 2011. In 2011, 142,263 drivers were cited for traffic safety violations, a 1,621 ticket increase from the previous year.

If convicted, demerit points remained on a driver’s DMV record. Improper passing, failure to obey lights and signs and improper passing warrant three demerit points. Following too closely earns four demerit points, which remains on a driving record for three years, and reckless driving can earn up to six points.

“Just one fender bender caused by an aggressive driver makes a difficult situation even worse; we’re trying to do something about this ongoing problem,” Culin said.

Ah Dave - You are not the law. You are angry because you THINK YOU ARE! The rules of the state of Virginia are in the drivers handbook. Get a copy and make sure you follow them. Your SUV is not a 70 ton Abrams tank. It is only a CAR! A transportation vehicle. If you hurt or kill a fellow driver or a cyclist or a pedestrian who is from another country where the streets are one way (8 or maybe even 6 feet from curb to curb) they do not pay attention to American rules of the road. The only ones they know are what they did in their homeland. Until the police make sure that the VIRGNIA rules of the road are thoroughly known to them and followed. Right now on US 1 there is a blinking sign for American drivers to look out for pedestrians (especially the women with a child in a carriage and at least one other child running beside its mother crossing 4 lanes of traffic in the middle of the block and no stop lights anywhere in the immediate vicinity of the pedestrians! Get with it man - you are behind what is really going on. The immigration of the poorer parts of the North American Continent!!!! You are also not in charge of the rules of the road. Your SUV does not have the right of way!

Sally, get back on the medication and get lucid before you begin your ramblings and ethnic stereotypes. I never mention ethnicity or race. If YOU could read and comprehend I simply said bicyclists and pedestrians do not have the god given right to pick and choose which traffic laws they can and cannot obey and if they are not obeying the law and get run over then too bad, so sad. I was involved in an accident last week because someone "thought" it would be okay to make a left turn from the right lane without a signal or slowing down. So I suppose that was my fault? So you can take your DMV booklet and use it for toilet paper because it isn't based in reality.

Grin: Get back on the meds? Tsk, Tsk! My DMV booklet? Sorry but the paper is rather thick and would be difficult to use. However, you live in Annandale. Maybe you don't have the multiplicity of people that we have along the US 1 corridor. I didn't mention ethnicity or race. You seem to understand what I posted, however. Coffee at Starbucks sometime? Love to and discuss the traffic as I see it, daily. I suspect you don't drive in the same area and I nor for as long. Ah welllllll - such is the way things are today. I repeat one thing, your SUV is not a 70- ton Abrams Tank. Injuring or killing with your car is a crime. Someone may have said it is not, but it is. What I said, I meant. It stands. Sorry to disappoint you, my mind is sharp. If you feel sane enough to meet me for coffee. I would like that. I have a corrolla sorta silver or maybe gray. I drove in California for a number of years. Those years I had a VW bug. Where my front wheels fitted was reason enough to occupy the space. Grin - Sally
