Man, 69, Dies After Car Accident in Fort Belvoir

Alex Kovacs died after being injured in a car accident last month.

A 69-year-old man died as the result of injuries he got in a car accident in Fort Belvoir last month, the Fairfax County Police Department announced Tuesday.

At about 6 a.m. on Nov. 22, a 2007 Chevrolet Cobolt was trying to make a left turn from northbound Richmond Highway into 9114 Richmond Highway, according to police.

The Cobalt was struck by a 2003 BMW driven by a 45-year-old man who was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway, police report. The driver of the Cobolt, Alex Kovacs of The Plains, Va., was ejected from his car.

Kovacs was taken to a local hospital, where he died on Dec. 6. The cause of the crash remains under investigation though it does not appear that alcohol is a factor.

DO NOT TURN LEFT FROM ROUTE ONE WITHOUT A DEDICATED TURN LANE. The middle line is generally a solid line, and the few breaks are for cars pulling onto Hwy 1, not turning off of it. When traffic is flowing fast, drivers in the middle lane are startled by stopped cars and may not be able to avoid a collision. Go past your turn to the next light, turn right off of the highway, turn around, go back out onto the highway turning left at a light and then make a right.
