In the car with Sanchez-Ramos was another male and a three-year old boy. Sanchez-Ramos fled the accident site with the boy, but was apprehended a short distance from the scene.

It was later reported that Sanchez-Ramos is in the country illegally, having been deported to his native Honduras in 2004, but returning to the United States sometime afterward. Sanchez-Ramos was also driving with suspended license, having lost it previously due to drunk driving. He faces a number of charges including manslaughter.
