Car Accident Shuts Down Route 1

Drivers suffer non-life-threatening injuries

A two-car accident yesterday morning closed a two-mile stretch of Route 1 north of Telegraph Road for about an hour and-a-half.

According to police a late model Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on Route 1 at approximately 9:30 in the morning when the driver attempted to make a u-turn near Britten Road. The car struck a Chrysler 300 traveling southbound on Route 1.

The driver of the Toyota, a female in her early 40s, was taken by helicopter to INOVA Fairfax with a broken leg and minor head injuries. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the Chrysler, a middle-aged male, was taken by ambulance to INOVA Fairfax with a compound fracture in his ankle.

Police say the driver of the Toyota will be charged with reckless driving.
