Did Ya Know? Methinks You Probably Don't.

The skinny on the Second Saturday Art Walks hosted by the Workhouse Arts Center.

On the second Saturday of every month the Workhouse Arts Center hosts a FREE after hours Art Walk. It is a lovely event wherein each building has a "Featured Artist" who is bestowed the best real estate (hanging space) in their prospective galleries to put on a quasi-solo show.  I say "quasi" because some buildings have more than one featured artist. Have you ever wondered how the "Featured Artists" are chosen?

Each gallery is self-governed by the resident artists occupying that particular building. Being that I'm in Building 4, I can only tell you how artists in Building 4 earn the limelight. When the Workhouse opened 2 years ago we came up with a schedule that would afford each artist the opportunity for a solo exhibition. Based on the number of artists over the course of  36 months, each of us would be able to have 2 shows.  A solo show is a precious jewel. Let me tell ya, unveiling a new series to the public is exciting, expensive and exhilarating!

The featured artist is tasked with cleaning or repainting the exhibition area and installing the show. She is also responsible for purchasing, setting up and breaking down all the food and drink for the reception. Artists have carte blanche to do whatever their heart desires in that space for an entire month. All of this is done with great love and pride to enrich the lives of the people in our community. We bring you original art. To inspire thinking, to make you smile, and color your world. But...

There is nothing more heartbreaking than when a visitors makes a b-line for the food, chows down, and leaves. Never once raising their head to even LOOK at the art. I can tell you from experience that sort of behavior STINGS. Ouch! We want your feedback. A ton of time and energy goes into creating a soild show. I'm encouraging people to comment on the work. Engage the artist in conversation. Take a moment to drink in the series and feed your creative appetite. Who knows you might even influence the artists next series?
