Information submitted by Girl Scout Troop 3189:

Lorton-based Girl Scout Troop 3189 hopes to send 500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to troops in Afghanistan.

The group is organizing the effort in memory of Staff Sgt. Alex Viola, a soldier from Texas who died earlier this year in Afghanistan. Viola was a family friend of one of the girl scouts. He was assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

The girl scouts are collecting donations toward covering postage to mail the cookies overseas. Scouts attend Laurel Hill and Lorton Station Elementary schools.
