Mom's Talk - Kids and Work

When is it worth it? Is it a different kind of education?

This week's topic is Kids and Work. What's your philosophy on having kids work? You all have kids at different ages so has that changed? Do you put boundaries on what will be done with the money, meaning it must go towards something specific like car insurance, college expenses or clothes? Are there "types" of jobs you want your kids to have -- like in retail or working outdoors?

Mom Lori Weinraub says:

Do kids today even have time to work? Between the heavy course loads they're expected to carry, sports, after-school activities and family time, not to mention the lack of sleep because they get up so early for school, where would they fit it in? But if they have the time and the desire to work, then I wouldn't discourage it. At 12, my daughter is too young for a traditional after-school job, although she has begun doing some babysitting. Her spending isn't an issue yet, but I do require her to use her money if she exceeds the amount I am willing to spend on her clothing. It's a good lesson for her and I think she has learned a lot about wants vs. needs. As she gets older, I do expect that she will work in the summer and use the money toward car expenses, clothing, things like that. And after time to adjust to college life, I would expect her to work as well.
