Disc Golf Tourney Celebrates Course Upgrade at Pohick Bay

This weekend's May Day Pohick tournament will be the first to take advantage of a course revamp

With the arrival of May, members of NoVa Disc Golf plans to celebrate improvements to Pohick Bay Regional Park’s course the best way they know how… in competition.

The Pohick May Day tournament on Sunday, May 1st tees of at 9:30 a.m. NoVa Disc Gold President Tom Coffin expects a crowd of about 72 participants.

The club played the Pohick course back in December, but things have changed a lot in five months.

“It’s interesting because we’ve been working with the park and between last tournament and this tournament we helped them install all new baskets,” Coffin said.

Pohick is one of the state’s oldest disc golf courses and Coffin says it hadn’t seen an upgrade for 30 years.

“This is a big deal for the park,” said Coffin. “It’s like we’re christening the new baskets, we’ve completely revamped the course.”

Sunday’s tournament is a Professional Disc Golf Association, or PGDA, Tier C event. It’s open to both amateurs and professionals and the entry fee and prize purse varies depending on skill level.

Participants will play 18 holes and two rounds; one in morning and one in the afternoon. Pre-registration is closed, but hopefuls can still sign up the morning of the event while space allows.

The aim in disc golf, much like regular golf, is to get your disc to the basket in the fewest number of throws. Coffin says it’s a sport that appeals to all age levels and is especially pleasant this time of year.

“Disc golf is a very enjoyable recreational activity. It’s nice to be outside instead of sitting on the couch watching TV all day.” Coffin said. “It gives you all the exercise you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We’re walking all day”

Pohick May Day is sponsored by Solano Spine and Sport Chiropractic and Casual Adventure.
