Fairfax County Parkway Traffic

Update on the Fairfax County Parkway

With the opening of the Fairfax County Parkway Extension along with the new employees arriving at the NGA building in Springfield, the Fairfax County Parkway (7100) has become more congested, especially during the evening rush hour.  Some of my constituents have expressed their concerns about this issue, so my office reached out to VDOT to see what could be done.

VDOT is aware of this issue and has spent the past couple of weeks monitoring the area, including the signal at the Fairfax County Parkway and Huntsman Road.   According to VDOT officials, this intersection is particularly unusual because it is the first signal on the Parkway that the traffic encounters after a very long stretch without signals during the evening rush hour.  An example they provided is to imagine driving on I-66, which does not have any signals, and then come across a bad accident that blocks all lanes for a minute duration every three minutes.  This same type of problem is occurring at the intersections of the Parkway at Popes Head Road along with the Parkway at Fairlakes Parkway.

VDOT will continue to monitor the problem and work to provide the best solution possible.
