Lorton Rainfall Oct 1-7, 2012; El Niño Not Developing Just Yet

Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6 a.m. from my rain gauge in Lorton.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center late last week updated its monthly El Niño discussion to describe what is happening in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. They noted that last month the trend towards El Niño slowed in several key oceanic and atmospheric indicators. That said, the Pacific basin reflects borderline neutral to weak El Niño conditions.   

As a result, when compared to the past few months, the chance is reduced for El Niño to develop during Northern Hemisphere fall/winter 2012-13.  Earlier I wrote about weak and moderate El Niño events during winter tend to result in temperatures colder than normal with above normal snowfall.  This looks like a wait and see kind of winter.

My rain gauge in Lorton recorded the following precipitation at 6 am on the day indicated for the previous 24 hours:
