Lorton Rainfall Jan. 7 - Jan. 13: Inaugural Weather

Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.

After a mild week, temperatures are forecast to be getting back closer to normal as we get closer to the Presidential Inauguration on Mon, Jan 21.  The long range forecast though shows the temperatures turning colder after that.  So what’s a normal day look like this time of year?

Climate Data for January 21

Normal High Normal Low Record High Record Low Record Precipitation Record Snow 43°F 28°F 70°F in 1959 -4°F in 1985 1.41 inches in 1902 3.5 inches in 1982

Tragedy from the cold has struck multiple inaugurations, the first in 1841 when President William Henry Harrison gave a speech lasted one hour and 40 minutes and he rode a  horse to and from the Capitol without a hat or overcoat on a cold and blustery day. He died just one month later from pneumonia which developed from a cold he caught on that day.  In 1853 for President Franklin Pierce’s Inauguration, as he began his address a heavy snow started. Abigail Fillmore, First Lady to the outgoing President Millard Fillmore, caught a cold which led to pneumonia.  She died at the end of the month.  Even if the weather isn’t any better, at least our medicine is.

My rain gauge in Lorton recorded the following precipitation at 6am on the day indicated for the previous 24 hours:
