Lorton Rainfall Dec. 24-30: 2012 in review
Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.
A look back at the year in precipitation shows that it was a dry one, with rainfall 7.72” below normal for the year. 2011 was just a bit dry (short 0.48” as well), though since 2006 we’ve had 15” more precipitation than we normally do during those 7 years.
Year Departure from normal (Inches) 2012 -7.72” 2011 -0.48” 2010 5.44” 2009 11.56” 2008 -6.54” 2007 4.68” 2006 8.07”
Lorton is a tricky place to calculate averages for. Although we usually get 44” of rain a year, there’s a lot of variability. For example, in 2011 15” fell over just seven days with the leftovers of Tropical Storms Irene and Lee, meaning on the whole it was a lot dryer than it looked. Similiarly, this year was a whole lot dryer than it looked if you don’t include the 5.74” of rain we got from Hurricane Sandy. Where you see wet years in the table above you can bet we had hurricanes, and in those dry years we ddin’t.
My rain gauge in Lorton recorded the following precipitation at 6am on the day indicated for the previous 24 hours:
