Lorton Rainfall: Dec. 17 - 23; Our first snowflakes!

Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.

Winter began this week, and right on cue, snowflakes were in the air.  Granted, you may have missed them, but they were blown along by Friday’s stiff wind a couple of different times during the day, and many locations in Fairfax County reported snow.  Nobody got more than a trace, though.  How does this year compare to the last previous five years in Fairfax county?  The snow’s late this year!  The first snowfall last year was just before Halloween (10/29/2011) but then none until 01/09/2012.  Before that the first snow dates were 12/13/2010, 12/06/2009, and 12/07/2008.

We got our first significant rain since Hurricane Sandy at the end of October this week.  My rain gauge in Lorton recorded the following precipitation at 6am on the day indicated for the previous 24 hours:

Very interesting article! I would only correct Rob's math--a posted speed limit of 160 kilometersRead More per hour is equal to 99 miles per hour, not 80. And 220 km/hr equals 136 mph--no wonder his knuckles were white,

Yes, did not do the conversion correctly. When on the road, I just use the 50% figure for a roughRead More estimate. 136 was not too much fun! Thanks,
