Lorton Rainfall May 28 - June 3, 2012
Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.
Quite a stormy evening on Friday, wasn’t it? The National Weather Service office in Sterling's local storm report includes several reports of tornadoes, wind damage, and flooding. Their forecast area includes Maryland and Virginia; locally the reports included numerous trees down in Burke, Gallows Rd flooding and being closed at Lee Highway, as well as Yates Ford Road being flooded and closed near the bridge over Bull Run. Here in Lorton I got 1.43” of rain, which prompted me to wonder how often that happens - over an inch of rain? It hasn’t been as rare as I thought this year - this was the sixth time this year we’ve had over an inch. It’s the most we’ve had at once since a storm on January 11, which was a colder rain no doubt.
Though the year has been dry, May was not. We received 0.25” more rain than normal in May, which brings our yearly deficit down to 4.47” for the year. My plants aren’t living in the past, though - they’re thriving on the current rain.
My daily totals for the week were:
