Lorton precipitation amounts May 6 - May 12, 2013; is this the week for Cicadas?

Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.

We’ve had a spell of optimal grass growing weather.  Not necessarily grass mowing though, as it’s been wet several days in a row.  As you’ve no doubt seen if you’ve been driving, the grass in the road medians has loved the weather too, and continues to grow to where you can’t consistently see the other side of the road if it’s not straight and level.  Be careful when turning left!

Our temperatures in the middle of May are a high of 75 degrees and a low of 51.  Soil temperatures have reached level (above 64 degrees) that the Cicadas should start emerging this week.  Perhaps the cool nights that the grass loves has been keeping them dormant.  With this coming weekend forecast to have highs in the 80s and lows above 60 I’d be surprised not to hear Cicadas by the weekend.  Not that I’m an entomologist.
