Lorton precipitation amounts Mar 18 - 24, 2013

Daily rainfall totals for previous 24 hours measured at 6am from my rain gauge in Lorton.

Maybe it’s spring, but it sure hasn’t felt like it, has it?  By now we should be having daily highs of 60 degrees, and overnight lows in the mid to upper 30s rather than waking up and scraping frost off our cars.  The outlook isn’t good.  A persistent blocking pattern has set up in the atmosphere from high pressure over Greenland, resulting in an arctic jet stream delivering cold air to us on the east coast.  The 6-10 day and 8-14 day temperature forecast probabilities show us likely to remain well below average... approaching 10 degrees according to the National Weather Service’s coupled forecast system model.   While that doesn’t mean we won’t see 70 degrees in the next two weeks it does mean that if we do we shouldn’t be surprised to see another cold windy and wet 40 degree day.  Guess when it was 10 degrees cooler?  The end of February, clearly still winter.

My rain gauge in Lorton recorded the following precipitation at 6am on the day indicated for the previous 24 hours.
