The Workhouse Arts Center hosted the 2nd Annual Workhouse Arts Gala on Saturday, October 20th at the Workhouse Arts Center. The evening began with guests mingling at a cocktail reception that included decadent hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction, full of community donations and Workhouse artists’ work. From there, they moved to an elegant dinner upstairs in the McGuireWoods Gallery, featuring filet mignon and seared mahi mahi. Dinner entertainment included an awards presentation and live auction, featuring a Nascar Experience hosted by a Sprint Cup team owner and a custom oil portrait from one of the Workhouse Arts Center’s exceptional artists, Patricia McMahon Rice. At the end of the evening, guests returned downstairs to the Vulcan Gallery to indulge in dessert and coffee, while dancing the night away with live music and ballroom dancing. Musical entertainment was provided by the Johnny Artis Band, a favorite local rock and roll/rhythm and blues band. Throughout the evening, guests were able to meet the Workhouse Art Center’s outstanding artists and view their work.

The Workhouse Arts Center was thrilled to have the former ABC-7 anchor and well-known news personality, Paul Berry, entertain guests as the Master of Ceremonies for the dinner. Brian Damewood was dynamic and exciting as the live auctioneer and boosted the live auction’s success.
The evening’s Honorary Chairman Dr. Alan G. Merten, President Emeritus of George Mason University (GMU), was honored for his outstanding commitment to GMU, as well as to the arts at GMU and throughout Fairfax County. When asked about the evening, Mr. Merten stated, “Just as George Mason University was the right place to be when I became president of Mason, now is the right time to forge a strong partnership between the University and the Workhouse Arts Center. I am honored to have been the Honorary Chairman of the 2nd Annual Workhouse Arts Gala. It was a very delightful evening.”
During dinner, Mount Vernon District Supervisor, Gerald W. Hyland, was presented the Lorton Arts Foundation (LAF) Founders Award by LAF Board Chairman Richard Hausler. The award was presented on behalf of the Workhouse community with appreciation and respect for Hyland’s steadfast support of LAF and the Workhouse Arts Center. “It is an honor to be the recipient of second annual Founders Award from the Lorton Arts Foundation. The Workhouse Arts Center is truly a jewel in Fairfax County. I’m pleased to have supported its creation and look forward to its continued growth,” said Mr. Hyland.
