8 Reasons to Celebrate Fall at the Workhouse

Starting with number 8 we will count down the best reasons for you to be at the Workhouse this fall!

8. “Winter is coming”. Now that the beach towels and snorkel gear are safely stashed away in the garage, it’s time to bust out the sweaters and jackets. And with that cooler weather, you’ll be seeking date nights and family outings that require less “out-of-doors” time, making a trip to the Workhouse Arts Center an item on your to-do list. Looking at art, seeing a performance in the W-3 theatre or learning a new skill during a workshop can be a great way to celebrate the beginning of fall “sweater weather”.

7. Get back on track. As soon as work starts up again or the kiddies head back to school, you can look forward to achieving normalcy once again—no more strange schedules, no more panicking over getting everything done before vacation or scrambling to catch up when you return. Enjoy getting back into the rhythm by enrolling in a fitness class like yoga, hula hoop fitness, Jazzercise or Tai Chi—not only will you get yourself back in shape but you will be able to continue these activities well into the winter.

6. Eat better and eat locally grown food. Nothing says fall like a comforting, home cooked meal on the table that everyone can enjoy. By shopping for ingredients at the local Farmer’s Market, you can feel good about what is on your plate as well as support the local economy. Get your fresh fruits, veggies, meats and more at the Workhouse Farmers Market on Thursdays, 3-7pm.

5. Help your community. Speaking of food—fall and winter is a great time to remember those neighbors in need. The Lorton Community Action Center and the Workhouse are collaborating on the Home For Dinner exhibition, featuring artwork from sixth grade students in local elementary schools, to help raise awareness about hunger and homelessness in southeast Fairfax County. Take the opportunity to help others or teach your children about helping others by leaving canned food in the gallery as a donation to be shared with those in need.

4. Halloween Mini Camp! The Workhouse is proud to present an all new seasonal camp offering for children in rising 2nd graders to 6th graders. The Halloween Mini Camp, on October 26 & 27 will feature instructor Jen Athanas, teaching kids how to customize their Halloween costumes and Chef Kathleen Linton, showing them how to make spooky, delightful Halloween treats! Registration is limited, so be sure to sign up your little ghoul early.

3. Get started early on the holiday shopping. No one enjoys the last mine scramble to purchase holiday gifts for friends and family. Get ahead of schedule by purchasing unique artful gifts from local artists at the Workhouse. With over 100 local artists working or displaying art on site, you are bound to find that perfect something for everyone on your list. Be sure to stay tuned for details and  join us for our Black Friday event on November 22.

2. “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary.” Enjoy the dark wonders of Edgar Allen Poe? See them set to music and onstage during The Music of Nevermore. Join us for a concert-style performance featuring Matt Conner’s musical interpretations of Edgar Allen Poe’s best known poems, stories and characters.

1. Turn a new leaf. The fall is a great time to try something new—whether it’s art, dance, theater, photography or writing—finding that new talent or rediscovering an old skill is the best way to embrace the new season. You can always find something new at the Workhouse Arts Center, visit our website: www.WorkhouseArts.org to view our exhibitions on display, performances happening in the W-3 Theatre or our new interactive class catalog online.
