Review: Transformers

In a summer filled with superhero and alien movies, Transformers: Dark of the Moon still manages to stand out

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon"  is enjoyable, especially if you liked the other "Transformers" movies . There are more comedic moments (and characters) than the last film, but it is also much darker and has a PG-13 rating.

The movie begins with the war on Cybertron, home planet to the Autobots and Decepticons, and depicts former Autobot leader Sentinel Prime trying to escape but crashing on the moon. The crash coincides with John F. Kennedy’s presidency and is the reason for his declaration to put an American on the moon.

Flash forward to present day, where Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) is living in Washington, D.C. with girlfriend Carly (British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), who is a welcome change from Megan Fox’s Mikaela. Now a college graduate, Sam is trying to find an entry-level job in D.C. - all while the Autobots are working with the government.

Frustrated by his mailroom job (and comedic boss Bruce Brazos, portrayed by John Malkovich), Sam begins to investigate the Autobot spacecraft that landed on the moon. Sam, with the help of Simmons and the Autobots, uncovers the truth about what crashed on the moon, and why the Autobots must find it first.
We see the return of some favorite characters including Simmons (John Tuturro), Lennox (Josh Duhamel), and Epps (Tyrese Gibson), and some new faces to the Transformers trilogy including former NASA scientist Jerry Wang (Ken Jeong) and Simmons’ assistant and computer hacker Dutch (Alan Tudyk).

Malkovich, Jeong and Tudyk, along with LeBeouf, provide most of the films comedic lines. Patrick Dempsey portrays Dylan, the first truly threatening human villain in the series, who works with Megatron to bring Cybertron into Earth’s orbit.

Decepticons vaporize humans (remember 2005’s War of the Worlds) and during the final battle in Chicago, it seems as if the Decepticons are going to out maneuver the human resistance.

It’s unclear now whether or not there are any plans for a fourth movie, but Michael Bay and Shia LeBeouf have reportedly expressed a desire to move on from the series.
