Party Atmosphere Opens Second Annual Exhibit

Urban Decay II at the Workhouse

Saturday evening’s opening reception for Urban Decay II had the feel of a party.  The second floor gallery of building W-16 at the Workhouse Arts Center was filled with fans of lowbrow art enjoying food, music, film, and artist demonstrations.

Low-brow art, also known as pop surrealism, originated as a movement in Los Angeles in the late 1970s.  It is influenced by many cultural art forms, including animated cartoons, comic books, graffiti, tattoo art, and punk music.

Workhouse Institute Administrator and Urban Decay II curator Debra Yarrington introduced the bands, visited with the artists, and welcomed guests.  “This show stems from the huge popularity of vinyl art in New York and Los Angeles,” said Yarrington.  “I wanted to have a show here, and it’s gotten bigger and bigger as we’ve prepared,” she said.
