Stars on Sunday & Art Under the Arches

Enjoy the sounds of big band swing, rock and roll, and Broadway in one great afternoon of art and music at the Workhouse.  View our own Explorers Visual Arts Campers' artwork on display around the Quad archways.  In the Performance Tent listen to the Nitehawks Swing, the young students of Workhouse music instructor Gregg Smith and the LMproject Crew presented by Reston Community Players.  Artwork will be on exhibit outside during normal Sunday hours (12pm - 5pm) and performances will take place in the tent from 1:30pm - 5pm.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCES

The Nitehawks Swing has been entertaining audiences around the Washington, DC metropolitan area for more than 15 years. Based in Northern Virginia, they play music for listening enjoyment and dancing pleasure. From the big band dance arrangements of Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington to high energy jump and jive tunes, and slow, belly-rubbing ballads, and even a little rock & roll. They set the mood and get everyone dancing through the night!

Gregg Smith grew up in Richmond, VA playing in rock bands. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2006 with a degree in Music Synthesis, he and his wife moved to Woodbridge, VA. He has played in venues such as the 9:30 Club, The Black Cat and DC9.  He currently teaches music lessons on drums, piano, guitar and bass in and around the DC metropolitan area, including the Workhouse Arts Center. His musical tastes cover everything from rock, pop, classical, rap, metal and new age.

The LMproject dance company was developed in the summer of 2005 by a group of dancers in New York City who were looking to spread their knowledge of dance and movement to children who were eager to learn how to move. The company's first performance was at The International Children's Festival at Wolf Trap Performing Arts Pavilion in Virginia. Artistic Director of the company, Alisa Claire, was first part of this festival as a child. She remembered how inspiring it was then. "I've cherished these memories for years. Its time to pass on some of the knowledge and confidence I've gained from that experience." Since working with The Fairfax Arts Council and The International Children's Festival, LM has broadened their educational programming to schools, festivals, and other organizations. Recently the company joined the Creative Arts Program, hoping to inspire and spread their love of dance and passion of performing. LM highly believes that a strong passion for the performing arts can be appreciated through performance but achieved through participation. They aim to showcase different styles of dance and music while displaying the variety of ways in which these expressions can interact. LMproject was designed to create an outlet for creativity and inspiration through movement, instill a sense of confidence and spread a love for dance and passion of performing through our hands on learning experience.
