SCSS Fall Production of MacBeth

Additional show time: Sat., Nov. 12, 2011, 7:30 p.m.

Macbeth is Shakespeare’s shortest play. It was written while James I was on the throne, probably in his honor since he was Scottish.  The play was based on an incident in Scottish history that Shakespeare found in which innocent families and entire armies were slaughtered, Kings were murdered, nobles were ambushed, and rebels were executed.

In the play, Macbeth (played by Yusuf Alizo) and Banquo (Dean Maldonato), two generals in the King’s army, are returning from battle, when they encounter three witches (Whitney Turner, Ruth Scherr, and Danica Abarquez) who tell Macbeth that he will be named Thane of Cawdor and then King. Shortly thereafter, the two men are met by two of the King’s men who congratulate Macbeth and Banquo and award Macbeth the title of Thane of Cawdor. When Macbeth’s wife (Amber Runge) hears of the news, she is consumed with the idea of making her husband king. Together they plot and kill the King (Brennan Bridger) before he can leave their home, blaming the murder on the two guards who were assigned to watch the King. The King’s sons, Malcolm (Alex Fischer) and Donalbain (AJ Lichstrahl) flee the country fearing for their own lives, and Macbeth is crowned King. As suspicions arise and loyalties are  broken, Macbeth’s plan begins to deteriorate around him.  His wife suffers from her guilty conscience, and Macduff (Connor Fenton) raises an army that includes some English forces to fight against Macbeth and once again win the crown for the rightful heir, Macolm. Macbeth sends men to murder Macduff’s wife and son(London Docherty and Hunter Weir). Macduff marches toward Macbeth for the final battle.

Macbeth contains some mature themes, some violence, and some strong language, and may not be appropriate for younger theatre goers.
