What You Need to Know About the Storm Aftermath in Lorton

How did you fare after Friday's storm?

Power is still out for thousands across the region, and a majority of Mason Neck is still in the dark after Friday's . Fallen limbs have cut power at three locations along Gunston Road, stripping power from hundreds of homes, Mason Neck State Park and Gunston Hall Plantation (which remains closed).

The outage stretches from the on Gunston Road down to the Potomac River, although the roadways are clear.

Working on Monday? 

Fort Belvoir is still experiencing a loss of power and will operate Monday with emergency-essential employees only. Other employees are asked to contact their supervisors. Power to the Garrison’s facilities and services remain largely unrestored. Check for updates via Lorton Patch, the Belvoir Facebook page and the phone hotline at (703) 805-3030. Federal workers: The Government is open on-time Monday. Employees have the option to use unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework.

Transportation

  • All Virginia Railway Express is operating at full and normal schedule.
  • Due to the extreme heat, Fairfax Connector and Metro will allow passengers to carry and consume water on the systems through closing Monday.
  • The access road at Route 1 and the Lorton Library into the Hagel Circle community is closed due to a fallen tree limb. 

Most Lorton intersections have power. If you encounter an intersection without power, treat it as a four-way stop. 

Businesses/Services:

On Saturday, power fully returned to the Shoppes of Lorton Valley, Gunston Plaza and the Lorton Market Shopping Center. 

The  (a great place to stay cool) and Lorton businesses along Route 1 in Lorton have reopened.   

 is open to the public

 and Pirate's Cove Waterpark at Pohick Bay are closed. 

The Lorton Volunteer Fire Department, which had been operating on generator power until Saturday, was back in operation Sunday. 

When's the Power Coming Back? 

Almost 300,000 people are still without power in Northern Virginia. Dominion says outages could last all week. .

The Weather

Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms Monday before 9 a.m. There is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

The rest of the day will be sunny, with a high near 93. The low temperature will be 70 degrees, and there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m., according to the National Weather Service
