VRE Operating at All-Time High

Few delays, high ridership

is operating at an all-time high, with 98 percent of trains running on time during the month of October. That means there were only 11 delays last month, even including waits of five minutes or more.

"Several recent initiatives undertaken by the Operations Board helped VRE reach these milestones," said VRE Board member and Fairfax County Board of Supervisors chair Sharon Bulova. "First, a new fleet of rail cars and locomotives were procured and have reduced mechanical issues and increased reliability. Second, VRE, in conjunction with the Commonwealth and host railroads CSX and NS, made significant investments in the railroad infrastructure to improve capacity and operational efficiency."

VRE, which operates trains on the Fredericksburg and Manassas lines, has made more than 49 million passenger trips since it began in the 1980s. "“I take pride in the efforts that we, as an organization, have taken to make the service better for our riders. I am on the train every day, so I know firsthand what needs to be done to make things better and more reliable for our passengers,” said Dale Zehner, VRE chief executive officer.
