2. On this day in 1789, the U.S. Congress granted "the establishment of the troops raised under the resolves of the United States in Congress assembled." In other words, Congress legalized the U.S. Army. 

3. On Sept, 29, 1951, NBC broadcasted the Duke and University of Pittsburgh football game, the first live broadcast of a sporting event coast-to-coast.

4. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi turns 75 today. Other famous Sept. 29 birthdays include British Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), movie director Stanley Kramer (1913-2001), Rock n' Roller Jerry Lee Lewis (b. 1935), U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) (b. 1942) and sportscaster Bryant Gumbel (b. 1948).

5. On Sept. 29, 1960, Soviet Union Premier Nikita Khrushchev interrupts a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly by pounding on a table with his fists and calling for the removal of the then-UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold  (unhappy over UN involvement in former Belgian Congo). The following month, he used the heel of his shoe as a gavel to hammer home his opposition to claims by the Phillippines delegate that the Soviet Union had deprived Eastern Europe "of the free exercise of their civil and political rights..."
