Surprise Snow, First in 2012, Hit Area Monday; No School Delay

NWS: Tuesday will be sunny with a high of 51 degrees

Apparently no one saw it coming. The first snow of 2012 was a surprise to the area when it started falling on Monday just after the lunch hour. Most of it didn't stick to roadways but there was a light dusting that stuck around on bushes, cars and grassy areas.

In some areas, kids donned snowsuits and quickly built a snowman or patted together a few snowballs.

No delays Tuesday morning for Fairfax County Public Schools, according to its emergency announcements Web site.

Tuesday is expected to be sunny with a high of 51 degrees, and the National Weather Service predicts a 70 percent chance of rain for Wednesday.

The only big snow in the forecast? The Farmers Almanac says to prepare for 12 inches of snow Feb. 20-23.
