Simple Sunday Recipe: Bruschetta

Looking for a quick appetizer for the football crowd?

Anyone in your family watching football today? If you're feeling adventurous, step away from the popcorn and pizza and try a new snack: Bruschetta

Bruschetta (pronounced broo-shet-a, accent on 'shet') is a fancy Italian name for sliced French bread with chopped tomatoes on top.

There are a few variations; here are the ingredients you'll need for the simplest: One loaf of French bread, 2-3 large tomatoes, garlic or garlic powder, olive oil, salt. (And shredded mozzarella for any cheese-lovers out there.)

1. Buy one loaf of fresh French bread/baguette

2. Slice it thinly, about a quarter to a half-inch, then place the slices on a cookie sheet; drizzle or brush with olive oil (but not too much) and warm them up in the oven on 400 degrees until toasty warm (it should only take about 10 minutes).

3. Chop tomatoes (three large tomatoes should suffice)

4. Chop up some fresh Basil until you have two tablespoons

5. Mince one clove of garlic or measure 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder

6. Mix tomatoes, basil and garlic in a bowl; add a pinch of salt

After you take the French bread slices out of the oven, spoon the tomato mixture on top of each slice. You're done! Enjoy.

(Variations of this recipe call for sprinkling tomato-topped slices with mozzarella cheese and then popping it back into the oven for a minute.)
