Silverbrook United Methodist Celebrates 105 Years

Friday, Saturday and Sunday are packed with eco-friendly events.

is celebrating its 105-year anniversary by going green. To commemorate the decision (and the church's 105-year anniversary), Silverbrook UMC is spending the weekend with bluegrass bands, barbecue, a moonbounce and nature-themed exhibits.

Silverbrook UMC Pastor Kim Barker-Brugman took a sabbatical in July and came back inspired. "It began in Yellowstone National Park for 10 days and then I spent time at a different park in Fairfax County two-to-three times a week," she told Patch. "We're considering a lot of options, like going geothermal and solar. We're also using real plates and coffee cups now. No styrofoam mugs or coffee cups any more. We put it in the dishwasher when we're done."

Since last month, the church has been in the midst of a sermon series on creation and taking care of the earth. "We feel that we need to get serious about going green in a big way this year," said Barker-Brugman.
