Richmond American: Tarp Gone on Silverbrook Rd., But Behind Schedule on Job Completion

The wet weather in April, May and June have made it tough to return the hill back to its grassy glory.

That long-standing soil erosion tarp is gone on Silverbrook Rd., but the ground is still too wet for replacement soil and grass to be moved into place.

"The reason things have been delayed is because of the amount of rain we've been getting - except for the last week," said Rob Baker, vice president of land development for property developer Richmond American Homes.

"This past April, May and June were the wettest that I've seen in 20 years," added Baker. "We had to put the tarp back during that time. As soon as it would stop raining it would start again. We have to dry out the material before we can replace it. "

Heavy flooding shifted the soil on the hill in the fall of 2011, and the tarp has covered a gaping hole near a community of town homes between Laurel Crest Drive and White Spruce Way.

"We're probably six-to-eight weeks behind at this point," said Baker. "I hope to get finished with this thing in the very near future."

When refinished, a rock-bedded riprap channel will funnel storm water from the top of the hill to prevent future landslides, said Baker.
