Pohick Church's Annual Christmas Mart Draws Big Crowds

Hundreds dined on lunch while shopping on the church grounds

On Thursday, almost 300 people came to Pohick Church for their 51st annual Christmas Mart. Craft tables were spread all over the church grounds and a luncheon was served. People could be seen milling around the large selection of crafts and baked good being sold. Chairperson Connie Myers spent almost an entire year planning the event, and the hard work paid off.

The Church decorates for the holiday season prior to Christmas Mart and leaves decorations up until after New Year's Day. Hanging mistletoe kissing balls were hung from chandeliers inside the buildings and outside from trees. Large wreaths and a large fruit display highlighted the entrances to the buildings.

In the newly decorated Common Room, there were three different seatings for lunch. Guests were served turkey salad, cranberry sauce, green beans, pumpkin pie, and other traditional Thanksgiving fare. Ladies from the church dressed in period Colonial costumes and served the meal on the church's 60 year old china.

Frozen casseroles were prepared weeks in advance and sold for people to have an easy but tasty meal at home over the Holiday season. The church's famous apple butter was also available for sale, along with breads, candies, and other homemade goodies. Warm apple cider could be smelled around the grounds and you between buildings.

Eleven different artists and vendors sold their goods during the luncheon. Tables were filled with handmade jewelries, table runners, household decorations, and handmade baby quilts. The Vestry House had a Christmas shop. The Women of Pohick Church spent months working on the decorations sold at the mart. Tiny trees with ornaments, stockings, wreaths, and candles were available.

A great time was had by all who enjoyed their seasonal lunch and enjoyed getting some early Christmas shopping done while full on pumpkin pie. Β
