Photos of the Day: A Hot Day for the Curtis Family Reunion

Stay hydrated and in the shade

Much of the country, including Northern Virginia is experiencing the hottest week of July - a heatwave that has the Heat Index value at 115 degrees.

The National Weather Service has instituted an excessive heat warning, which will remain in effect until 8:00 p.m. But that didn't stop the Curtis family reunion at Occoquan Regional Park. More than a dozen people traveled from Jamaica, Illinois, Maryland and New York for the picnic, which included ice-cold grapes and watermelon. 

"The worst of the heat will be during the afternoon and early evening hours today and Friday," according to the NWS. "Excessive heat likely will continue on Saturday."

National Weather Service Tips during the heatwave: 

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Check in on relatives and neighbors
  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside
  • When possible, reschedule strenuos activities to early morning or evening
  • Know the signs and symptons of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • Wear lighweight and loose-fitting clothing 
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Heat strkoke is an emergency - Call 911

There will be another excessive heat warning tomorrow from noon to 8:00 p.m.
