Maryam Ulomi Leaving Lorton Community Action Center

She's been the deputy director for six years

Maryam Ulomi, the deputy director of the Lorton Community Action Center, is moving on. After six years with the LCAC, Ulomi has accepted a position with the Fairfax County Office For Children, and will leave the LCAC by the end of the month.

"I think its going to be challenging [for the LCAC], but they'll be ok," Ulomi said. "I've been very proud to work here. I'm excited, even though I know they're going to be sad… One aspect that I'm proud of is I think I was able to do a good job in streamlining the operations of the agency, to give them more of an order and professionalism."

The LCAC opened a new food pantry facility last year and gave food to more than 2,500 needy Fairfax County residents. The nonprofit also assists with clothing, financial aid, ESL classes, pro-bono legal assistance, tutoring and youth programs.

Christine Morin, senior staff aide to Mount Vernon Supervisor Gerry Hyland, met Ulomi three years ago. "Maryam's been very effective in the County, and I think she has shown great poise," she said. "She's very approachable and easy to talk to." Last month, Steve Rorke stepped down as the LCAC's executive director. The position will be filled early next year by the LCAC Board. The LCAC will fill the deputy director position with an interim staffer until the Board finds Ulomi's replacement.

What effect will this have on the LCAC? Board President Lynn Swagger did not respond to Patch's telephone requests for comment.

Kathy Noone is the LCAC director of human resources. "Maryam is a wonderful individual with the highest integrity and loyalty. She's smart as a whip and wise beyond her years," she said. "When she came in I sort of mentored her and she picked things up very quickly. She'll be greatly missed."
