Police Charge Man with Franconia Murder
Fairfax County Police charged Eric Kweder with murder Friday. Kweder is the suspect in the homicide of his apparent roommate on Hydrangea Drive in Franconia. Police had not yet released the deceased's name on Friday afternoon.

NOVA Professor Wins Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence
A professor at the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) is the winner of the 2012 Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE).
Callan Bentley, assistant professor of Geology, was selected by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) as the recipient of the annual award for his expertise on the earthquake in August 2011.
Bolling Drops Out of 2013 Race for Governor
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling announced Wednesday morning that he is hanging his hat up in the race for governor, likely to clear the way for Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia’s attorney general, to win the Republican nomination.
“For the past seven years I have had the honor of serving as Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor and it had been my intention to seek the Republican Party’s nomination for Governor in 2013,” he said in a statement Wednesday morning. “However, not everything we want in life is meant to be.”
Tawny Hammond Named New Chief of Fairfax County Animal Shelter
The Fairfax County Animal Shelter has a new chief, and will soon have a new home. Tawny Hammond, a longtime county employee and former manager of Frying Pan Park, officially started as the new director of the shelter last month, and the facility at 4500 West Ox Road will be expanding next door in December.
Fire Engulfs Home on Fielding Street in Mount Vernon
A fire engulfed a home Thursday afternoon in the 4100 block of Fielding Street in Mount Vernon. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue firefighters were on the scene a little after 3 p.m.
Firefighters responded to a call at 3:09 that came in from a bystander, said a spokesman for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
Woman Dies in Fatal Car Crash in Springfield
A 62-year-old woman died on Tuesday after her car veered off the road and struck a tree.
According to a news release from the Fairfax County Police Department, Dinh Quy, a resident of the 6200 block of William Edgar Drive in Alexandria, was driving in the parking lot of the shopping center near Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Lorton Girl Burned in Gasoline Fire Discharged from Hospital
Lorton resident Mary Cox, 7, returned home to Lorton from Boston's Shriner's Hospital, where she was recovering from burns suffered Oct. 20 in a gasoline fire at her home in Lorton.
Mary was discharged from Shriner's Hospital for Children in Boston Monday and she returned home Tuesday.

A Fairfax man faces two additional charges in connection with a fatal crash in Yorkshire that left one dead on Thanksgiving.
Jeffrey Scott Davis Jr., 23, of Englishwood Lane is charged with driving under the influence-involuntary manslaughter and not wearing a seatbelt, Prince William County Police reports show.
Vehicle, Bicycle Collisions Up in Fairfax County
Accidents between vehicles and bicycles in Fairfax County are happening more frequently this year — the latest claiming the life of a Falls Church woman.
There have been 54 collisions between vehicles and bicycles this year with one fatality, up from 44 accidents between bicyclists and vehicles with no fatalities in 2011.
$1 Million Lottery Ticket Sold in Arlington, Mount Vernon
While no one in the city of Alexandria lucked out with a winning Powerball ticket this go-around, a $1 million ticket was sold in Arlington.
The day before, a $1 million Mega Millions ticket was sold at Safeway, 7451 Mount Vernon Square, in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County, said Virginia Lottery spokesman John Hagerty.
Polo Grill Closes, IHOP Moving In
The booths at the Polo Mediterranean Bar & Grill have been auctioned off, the walls are bare and the doors are closed for good. Wednesday was the last day of business for the Gunston Plaza restaurant, and new owner IHOP will begin renovation this February.

Clifton Holiday Model Train Display This Weekend
The Fairfax Station Railroad Museum will present its 23rd annual holiday Model Train Display event with about a dozen layouts of trains from local enthusiasts in addition to the museum’s permanent displays.
Hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon – 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children.

Dancers from Just Dance Studio Make Holiday Debuts at the Hippodrome and Kennedy Center
Natalie Edwards, 11, of Alexandria, who joined the U.S. touring production of Billy Elliot the Musical in September, will perform with the cast when it stops at The Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore, Dec. 18-30. Natalie has been studying dance for eight years under Sally Tierney, owner and director of Just Dance in the Fairfax County part of Alexandria, in the Belle View Shopping Center off Fort Hunt Road.
