Here are five fun things to do in the Lorton area this weekend

It’s the weekend and you’re looking for fun things to do. Patch can help with our top picks for activities in the Lorton area.

  • When: Friday, 7 p.m.
  • Where: South County Secondary School, 8501 Silverbrook Rd., Lorton
  • What: Football season is just around the corner so this is a good time to get a look at this season’s varsity players.
  • Cost: Free
  • When: Saturday, 11 a.m.
  • Where: Fountainhead Regional Park, 10875 Hampton Rd., Fairfax Station
  • What: Explore the Occoquan Reservoir by water. No experience necessary but reservations are required.
  • Cost: $25
  • When: Saturday, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Where: South County Secondary School, 8501 Silverbrook Rd., Lorton
  • What:  The Metropolitan Performing Arts Theatre presents “A Little Summer Night Music” to celebrate its first five years and look ahead to next season. More than 20 actors and singers will perform selections from “Rag Time,” “Little Women,” “A Chorus Line,” “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Sweet Charity,” “Miss Saigon,” “Shrek,” “Avenue Q,” “Wicked,” “Spring Awakening,” “Hairspray,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Next to Normal,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “The Fantastiks,” “Songs for a New World,” and “Cats.” The MYTE tap ensemble also will perform and there will be scenes from the upcoming show “30 Reasons.”
  • Cost: Pay what you can
  • When: Sunday, 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
  • Where: Mason Neck State Park, 7301 High Point Rd., Lorton. Meet at the large pond by the car top boat launch.
  • What:  In this pond study program, participants immerse themselves in the wonders of area wetlands. Hands-on collection and observation will help you learn about the amazing adaptions of aquatic creatures.
  • Cost: The program is free but vehicles must pay to enter Mason Neck State Park.
  • When: Sunday, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Where: Lake Accotink, 7500 Accotink Park Rd., Springfield.
  • What: It’s the last cruise of the summer for people ages 8 and older and dogs of all ages. Enjoy a cruise on Lake Accotink on a pooch-friendly pontoon boat. Catch the last rays of the sun as it dips toward the distant lake shore while you and your dog scan for ducks, geese and other lake dwellers.
  • Cost: $6 per person; dogs are free, with a limit of one dog per person. Reservations required. Cruises are canceled for gusty winds or rain.
