Here are five fun things to do in the Lorton area this weekend

It's the weekend and you're looking to have some fun. Patch can help with our top picks for things to do in the Lorton area. 

  • When:  Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 
  • Where: Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, 11200 Fairfax Station Road, Fairfax Station.
  • What: John McAnaw of the Bull Run Civil War Round Table will lead the "First Sesquicentennial Tour Celebrating the Civil War in Fairfax County – 1861."  Seldom seen sites, including earthworks in and around Centreville, the site of Mt. Gilead and Union fortifications defending Fairfax Station, are among the stops. Caravan transportation from the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum.
  • Cost: $25 for museum members and $30 for non-members.  Call John at 703-978-3371 for more information. Wear sturdy walking shoes.

  • When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
  • Where: Hidden Pond Nature Center, 8511 Greeley Blvd., Springfield
  • What:  Learn about local snakes and discover where to find them.  Program includes short walk around grounds to see likely snake habitat. For ages 6 and up.
  • Cost: $5 for Fairfax County residents and $7 for non-residents. Registration is required. Call (703) 451-9588.

2nd Saturday Art Walk

  • When: Saturday, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Where: Workhouse Arts Center,  9601 Ox Road, Lorton
  • What:  The 2nd Saturday Arts Walk showcases the diverse work of more than 150 artists in a unique historic venue. Tour seven studio buildings, mix and mingle with artists and buy original works of art. Light refreshments served.
  • Cost: Free
  • When: Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Where: 7144 Main St., Clifton
  • What: The Clifton Day Festival features a variety of craft and antique vendors, music, children’s activities and an Oktoberfest Beer Garden.

 

  • When: Sunday, 7 p.m.
  • Where: George Mason University, 4400 University Drive, Fairfax
  • What:  The Aquila Theater touring company presents Oscar Wilde’s comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest” at the GMU Center for the Arts Concert Hall. A company member will give a pre-performance lecture at 6 p.m.
  • Cost: Tickets start at $20.
