Here are five fun things to do in the Lorton area this weekend

It's the weekend and you're looking for fun things to do. Patch can help with our top picks for activities in the Lorton area.

  • When: Friday, 8 p.m.
  • Where: Pohick Church, 9301 Richmond Highway, Lorton.
  • What: Bring the family to see “Charlotte’s Web.” Movies usually are screened outside but this week’s show will be inside due to the heat.
  • Cost: Free but donations are appreciated.
  • When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
  • Where: Burke Lake Ampitheater, 7315 Ox Rd., Fairfax Station
  • What: In “The Fabulous Five Senses,” the audience comes to the aid of a puppet that needs help acquiring the senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. The puppet then travels back in time to the Mesozoic Era to meet hungry dinosaurs. And again with the help of the audience, the mysterious sixth sense is discovered, and everyone gets home safely.
  • Cost: Free
  • When: Saturday and Sunday, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Where: Mason Neck State Park, 7301 High Point Rd., Lorton, meet at Visitor Center.
  • What:  Look for bald eagles, osprey and red tailed hawks and learn about their lives.  Binoculars are recommended.
  • Cost: Free with admission to park of $4 per vehicle.
  • When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Where: Fountainhead Regional Park, 10875 Hampton Rd., Fairfax Station
  • What:  Did you know that the previous record catfish was caught out of the Occoquan Reservoir? This monster was released and still lurks in the depths of the Occoquan. This is your chance  to compete against other anglers and fish into the night at Fountainhead Regional Park. Fishing will take place on the boardwalk and pier. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place based on total weight, as well as biggest fish. Participants are limited to two poles. Space is limited to 25 participants.
  • Cost: $25
  • When: Sunday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Riverside Park, George Washington Parkway and Stratford Lane, Alexandria.
  • What: Enjoy a bicycle ride along the Mount Vernon Trail with a ranger. Riders must bring their own bicycle and a helmet that fits. Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended. There are no restrooms or water fountains on the tour so plan accordingly. Reservations are not required but you are asked to call ahead if you are bringing 10 or more people, 703-289-2553.
