Here are five fun things to do in the Lorton area this weekend

It’s the weekend and you’re looking for fun things to do. Patch can help with our top picks for activities in the Lorton area.

1.

  • When: Friday, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Where: Grist Mill Park, 4710 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Alexandria.
  • What: Hui O Ka Pua ‘llima performs traditional and contemporary songs and dances of Hawaii and the Polynesian islands of New Zealand and Tahiti.
  • Cost: Free

2. 

  • When: Saturday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Rd., Lorton
  • What: Support the Workhouse’s ceramics program by purchasing a handmade bowl created by a student, instructor or resident artist and fill it with ice cream. The local band “Backyard Blues’’ will be dishing out their soulful classic rock and blues. All proceeds benefit the Lorton Arts Foundation and the Workhouse Ceramics Program.
  • Cost: $15 for a bowl and ice cream. $5 raffle tickets will give you three chances to win a piece of art from one of the Workhouse’s ceramic artists.

  • When: Saturday, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Where: Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Rd., Lorton
  • What:  The Workouse stays open late on the second Saturday of each month to showcase the work of its more than 150 artists. Guests can tour seven unique studio buildings, mix and mingle with artists, buy original works of art, experience ever-changing exhibitions and meet featured artists. There will be music and light refreshments will be served.
  • Cost: Free

  • When: Sunday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Rd., Lorton
  • What: Enjoy a family friendly program of ethnic music and dance. Experience the cultures of India, Korea and Bolivia by performers in full costume.
  • Cost: Free

  • When: Daily, during Mount Vernon’s regular hours
  • Where: Mount Vernon, 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Alexandria
  • What: A new exhibition has been organized in honor of the sesquicentennial of the opening of Mount Vernon to the public in 1860. “Bringing Them Home” celebrates the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association 150-year pursuit of original Washington artifacts, including fine and decorative arts, books and manuscripts. Most items are being publicly displayed for the first time. The exhibit will run through Jan. 8, 2012.
  • Cost: Included in price of admission.
