Get Out: Weekend Planner

Here are five fun things to do in the Lorton area this weekend

  • When: Saturday, 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Where: Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Rd, Lorton.
  • What:  Celebrate Independence weekend with Arts & Stripes, a Workhouse salute to the military and the arts. The day begins with a reception to open the Curated Military Art Exhibition, followed by activities for the family. The New Dominion Choraliers will perform at 4 p.m. and the U.S. Navy’s premier jazz ensemble, The Commodores, will take the stage at 7 p.m. to cap the day.
  • Cost: Free, with a $5 suggested donation to benefit the Lorton Arts Foundation.

  • When: Friday, 7 p.m.
  • Where: 125 Mill St., Occoquan.
  • What: Take a walking ghost tour of Old Town Occoquan. Prepare to walk for about an hour.
  • Cost:  $10 for adults, $5 for children 10 and under.

  • When: Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Where: VRE Parking Lot, 8900 Lorton Station Blvd., Lorton
  • What: Local farmers and other food vendors sell their goods weekly. A master gardener is available to answer questions as well.

  • When: Monday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Where: Mount Vernon, 3200 George Washington Memorial Parkway, Alexandria
  • What: Celebrate America’s birthday at the home of its first president, George Washington. The Independence Day event features a made-for-daytime fireworks display, military reenactments, a special wreath laying ceremony, a visit from George and Martha Washington and a naturalization ceremony for 100 new American citizens.
  • Cost: An American Celebration is included in the price of admission to Mount Vernon. $15 for adults, $7 for children ages 6 to 11 and free for children 5 and younger.

  • When: Monday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Where: Mason Neck State Park, 7301 High Point Rd., Lorton
  • What:  Start the day by decorating your bicycle for the Bike Parade, then recycle for the birds and end the day by looking for majestic eagles.
