Here are some fun things to do in the Lorton area this weekend

It's the weekend and you're looking to have some fun. Patch can help with our top picks for activities in the Lorton area.

  • When: Friday, Oct. 28, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Where: South County Secondary School, 8501 Silverbrook Road, Lorton
  • What:  Be spooked at South County Secondary School’s Haunted House. Recommended for grades 4 and up. There will be games, activities and food in the cafeteria while you wait.
  • Cost: $3 per ticket or $5 for a “scare pair.”
  • When: Friday, Oct. 28, 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Rain date: Saturday, Oct. 29).
  • Where: Cranford United Methodist Church, 9912 Old Colchester Road, Lorton
  • What:  Did you know that Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers are buried in Lorton? Join those brave souls and sing songs, roast marshmallows and hot dogs and share ghost stories around a roaring campfire near the Cranford Graveyard. Come in costume or come as yourself. Be warned: the ghost stories start out tame but get scarier as the evening progresses.
  • Cost: Free
  • When: Saturday, Oct. 29, All day
  • Where: Laurel Hill Park, Lorton Road, Lorton
  • What: Tremble at tales of Lorton Prison’s past on a one-hour wagon ride through Laurel Hill Park, which is on the site of the former prison.
  • Cost: $8 per person. Call 703-222-4604 to reserve your seat.
  • When: Saturday, Oct. 29, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Where: Lorton Senior Center, 7722 Gunston Plaza, Lorton
  • What: Support the Lorton Senior Center and shop from local artisans and crafters. Homemade baked goods for sale as well. Enjoy harp music by Chris VanDyke from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • When: Saturday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Mason Neck State Park, 7301 High Point Road, Lorton, 703-339-2385
  • What: Polish your outdoor skills at Mason Neck State Park. Experts take on a new skill every hour, starting with outdoor photography at 10 a.m. There also will be sessions on leaving no trace, orienteering, disaster preparedness and hiking.
  • Cost:  Learning is free but you will have to pay $4 per vehicle admission to the park.
  • When: Saturday, Oct.  29, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Where: Buckley Park, Clifton
  • What:  Enter the mile-long Clifton Haunted Trail through a twisted grove of trees but watch your back because you never know which way the terror will hit you. Also keep a watch out for the legendary headless horseman, who might ride by from time to time. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a parent.
  • Cost: $15 for adults and $5 for children under 10
