Get Out: Weekend Planner

Five great ways to spend the weekend.

How long will your weekend be? For some government workers who are furloughed, a shut down starting Friday at Midnight means you may have an extended weekend. The Smithsonian, National Parks, and all Federal buildings will be closed if the  budget is not passed. The good news: there are great things going on here in Lorton, many of which are free.

1. Pohick Bay Regional Park is putting on an . Meet at 7:00pm on Friday night at the Pohick Bay Marina. Bring a flashlight to this free event and be ready for an evening of searching and discovery while looking for frogs, toads, and salamanders.

2. Gunston Elementary School is hosting a for their new hiking trail and to celebrate Earth Day. The PTA-sponsored event begins at 9am on Saturday.

3. for Pohick Bay Regional Park is on Saturday from 9:00am-12:00pm. This is the 23rd year for the event and includes clean-up sites all over Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland.

4. Lorton’s Workhouse has its this weekend. The event is free and features over 150 artists. The Workhouse’s seven buildings will be open from 6:00-9:00pm.

5. Use Sunday’s beautiful weather to treat yourself to a River Cruise. River Shore Charters operates from the Occoquan Regional Park and has trips to Occoquan shops and Dumfries as well as cruises. Sailing times are offered hourly on the weekend and begin at $10.
