2. On this day in 2008, Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi shouted to U.S. President George W. Bush: "This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, you dog" and threw his shoes at him at a Baghdad news conference. Al-Zaidi was imprisoned for six months for the offense. 

3. On Dec. 14, 1946, the United Nations General Assembly voted to make New York City its headquarters.
