1. On Jan. 8, 1790, President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address in New York, New York. "The welfare of our country is the great object to which our cares and efforts ought to be directed," he said. "And I shall derive great satisfaction from a cooperation with you, in the pleasing though arduous task of ensuring to our fellow citizens the blessings which they have a right to expect, from a free and equal government."
2. On this date in 1964, U.S. President Lyndon Johnson declared a "War on Poverty" in his fist State of the Union address. The address led to the passage of the Economic Opportunity Act, which increased the government's role to assist the poor via government-sponsored programs like Head Start and VISTA. 
3. Famous birthdays: American radio host Kojo Nnamdi is 68; British musician David Bowie is 66 and American baseball player Jason Giambi is 41. 
4. The weather today will be sunny with a high temperature of 52 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The evening will be mostly clear with a low of around 31. 
5. The South County Federation meets tonight in the library of South County High School. On the agenda is a discussion on a proposal to build office and shops out of a storage yard on the east side of Telegraph Road. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.
