2. On Feb. 19, 1045, more than 30,000 U.S. Marines landed on the Japanese Isaland of Iwo Jima. The battle resulted in 20,000 enemy deaths and 6,800 American deaths. Only 216 Japanese were captured as prisoners, as their commander vowed to never surrender.
