Can you believe it's December 1?

1. President Abraham Lincoln made his State of the Union speech on this date in 1862, exactly one month before the Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law.

"Fellow-citizens, we can not escape history. We of this Congress and this Administration will be remembered in spite of ourselves," Lincoln said. "In giving freedom to the slave we assure freedom to the free--honorable alike in what we give and what we preserve. We shall nobly save or meanly lose the last best hope of earth."

2. Dr. Pepper was first served on this day at a drug store in Waco, TX.

3. On Dec. 1, 1955, seamstress Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery Alabama. Parks was arrested, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott followed. 

4. American film director Woody Allen turns 76 today. Other birthdays include American comedian Richard Pryor (1940-2005), American singer and actress Bette Midler (b 1945), Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar (1945-1993) and American comedian Sarah Silverman (b.1970).
