Former member of Congress held seat from 1995-2008 now held by Democrat Gerald Connolly
Former GOP Congressman Tom Davis, who once represented Virginia's 11th Congressional District, has endorsed Chris Perkins for his old seat. Perkins is facing fellow Republican Ken Vaughn in a Republican primary election June 12. The winner will challenge incumbent Congressman Gerald Connolly (D-11th) and independent Mark Gibson in a race for the 11th Congressional District seat. The new 11th District stretches from Dale City to Reston, including all or part of Woodbridge, Lorton, Burke, Springfield, Fairfax, Vienna, Centreville and Annandale. When Davis was in office, the 11th District did not include areas south of Dale City or north of Vienna, but included parts of Mount Vernon to the east and Clifton, Bristow and Haymarket to the west…
Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.
Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…
Optimism abounds over home of George Mason — and for the first time in years.
Gunston Hall Interim Director Mark Whatford is working hard to improve communications with the Board of Regents, brainstorming over ideas for events and more community involvement, and having fun while doing it. For the first time in years, some say, there's a sense of optimism around Lorton's historic plantation. "I'm having a hell of a good time right now," said Whatford, who is also Gunston Hall's librarian, archivist and IT specialist. Whatford now works about 80 hours a week for his two full-time jobs. On Monday night, Gunston Hall's Board of Visitors presented and approved their annual report for 2011. The 20-page document — unveiled at a public hearing — is now on its way to the Governor's office. It makes a number of …

A cocaine ring, school security cameras and more in the news this week across Fairfax County.
Here’s a look at some of the top Patch stories of the past week from across southern Fairfax County and a look at what’s coming up: Cocaine Ring More than two dozen people from Northern Virginia were arrested in connection with a Honduran cocaine ring. According to case documents, those charged — largely Honduran immigrants who have lived in Northern Virginia for the past seven years — hired couriers to smuggle cocaine to the United States, usually through wooden shoes or picture frames. In other crime news, police arrested Gloria Alfreda McMillan and charged her with a felony hit and run that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Shelinda Delores Arrington earlier in May on Harrison Lane in the Groveton area. School Security Cameras The …

The governor signed 13 pieces of legislation into law that deal with human trafficking, protecting victims of domestic violence and enhancing campus safety.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) signed into law 13 pieces of legislation Tuesday geared toward enhancing campus safety, protecting and supporting victims of domestic violence, human trafficking and other violent crimes, at the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College. The visit was part of his "Virginia: Growing Strong" statewide tour. The audience at the Ernst Cultural Center all stood as the McDonnell was introduced by NOVA Community College President Dr. Robert Templin, Jr. before he addressed the audience. “As a father of five, human trafficking and crimes of sexual abuse are a parent’s worst nightmare,” McDonnell said to a crowd comprised of 150 local elected officials, NOVA students and faculty, the Governor's Domestic…

Who are your neighbors donating to in the U.S. Senate race in Virginia?
The Virginia Senate race is neck-and-neck, with Tim Kaine and George Allen split down the middle, according to a new Washington Post poll. Each candidate has 46 percent, the same as a year ago, the newspaper noted. Kaine is ahead in fundraising, collecting $7,434,457 to Allen's $6,137,826 as of March 31. Allen is in a primary race with three fellow Republicans, while Kaine has the Democratic field to himself. Allen leads the race in donations from in-state donors, with 47.8 percent of his donations coming from Virginia. Kaine's in-state donations account for 31.3 percent, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. However donations of less than $200 total $421,434 for Kaine and $130,700 for Allen. New map feature includes drop-down menu for Blackberry users.
The Virginia Railway Express recently debuted changes to the mapping feature in its Rail Time system, a program used by riders to track the whereabouts of trains on the Manassas and Fredericksburg Lines. VRE officials were prompted to make the change to Rail Time after Microsoft canceled MapPoint—the mapping feature Rail Time used—in December, VRE spokesman Mark Roeber said this week. Microsoft customers like VRE were then required to migrate to Bing in order to continue providing maps for services like Rail Time, he said. VRE made the changes available to the public this week after converting its account to Bing and making some changes to its scripts and code so the Bing maps can work well with the system. Officials said the 9-year-old …
