Former Congressman Tom Davis Endorses Chris Perkins for 11th District Race

Former member of Congress held seat from 1995-2008 now held by Democrat Gerald Connolly

Former GOP Congressman Tom Davis, who once represented Virginia's 11th Congressional District, has endorsed Chris Perkins for his old seat.  Perkins is facing fellow Republican Ken Vaughn in a Republican primary election June 12. The winner will challenge incumbent Congressman Gerald Connolly (D-11th) and independent Mark Gibson in a race for the 11th Congressional District seat. The new 11th District stretches from Dale City to Reston, including all or part of Woodbridge, Lorton, Burke, Springfield, Fairfax, Vienna, Centreville and Annandale. When Davis was in office, the 11th District did not include areas south of Dale City or north of Vienna, but included parts of Mount Vernon to the east and Clifton, Bristow and Haymarket to the west…

Independent Candidate for Congress Campaigns on a Shoestring

Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.

Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…

I have known Jason from volunteering together on George Mason University School of Management Alumni Chapter Board. I support his campaign because I want to see him doing great things as an Independent in the House of Representatives and giving it 110% as he does with everything in his life.   more ›

Mr. Kaine, Do you believe in human-induced global climate change? If so, what will you do in the senate to address it? A recent HBO series addressed the epidemic of obesity in the US, and suggested that enormous subsidies to the US corn & soybean industries are partly to blame. Do you support massive subsidies to US agriculture? What changes would you make to these subsidies, if any? What …   more ›

Virginia Senate Race: Donations by ZIP Code

Who are your neighbors donating to in the U.S. Senate race in Virginia?

The Virginia Senate race is neck-and-neck, with Tim Kaine and George Allen split down the middle, according to a new Washington Post poll. Each candidate has 46 percent, the same as a year ago, the newspaper noted. Kaine is ahead in fundraising, collecting $7,434,457 to Allen's $6,137,826 as of March 31. Allen is in a primary race with three fellow Republicans, while Kaine has the Democratic field to himself. Allen leads the race in donations from in-state donors, with 47.8 percent of his donations coming from Virginia. Kaine's in-state donations account for 31.3 percent, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. However donations of less than $200 total $421,434 for Kaine and $130,700 for Allen. Romney Trails Obama by 8 Points in Poll

Public Policy Polling released the results of a new survey Tuesday; Romney is campaigning in Chantilly Wednesday.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney trails President Barack Obama by eight points in a poll of Virginia voters by Public Policy Polling. PPP released the poll results Tuesday; Romney is visiting a company in Chantilly Wednesday on a campaign stop. Obama leads Romney 51 – 43 percent, up slightly from PPP’s poll in December when Obama led by six points (48 – 42). In the late April poll, 6 percent of respondents said they were undecided. PPP surveyed 680 Virginia voters through an automated telephone interview system from April 26 to April 29. The margin of error for the survey is +/-3.8 percent. “We have polled Virginia six times this election cycle and have found Barack Obama with a decent sized lead over Mitt Romney every single time,” …

GOP Contender for 8th District Running Low on Funds

J. Patrick Murray's campaign lists almost $30,000 cash on hand; FEC notes debts of $38,000

The campaign of J. Patrick Murray, the sole Republican candidate running against Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th District), is running low on funds, according to the latest campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. An FEC disclosure form states that Murray has: "What you see is long-term debt that is money I loaned to the campaign," Murray told Patch on Monday. "That's my money, largely from the first time I ran. We don't owe anybody anything. We have cash on hand and continue to do more." Murray ran against Moran, an 11-term incumbent, in 2010, taking 37.31 percent of the vote. Murray said his campaign is "working hard to raise more" funds and plans to hold a fundraiser for his campaign on May 22 with Virginia …

Moran Challenger Allowed on Ballot, in Reversal

Bruce Shuttleworth had claimed he was unlawfully left off the Democratic primary ballot.

The Virginia State Board of Elections announced Monday evening it would allow a Democratic primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Jim Moran on the ballot after initially disqualifying him. Bruce Shuttleworth, an Arlington resident, filed a lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In the lawsuit, he claims Democratic Party officials failed to certify valid signatures his campaign collected from voters residing in the 8th Congressional District, leaving Moran the only candidate to be certified for the ballot. The Washington Post reported Monday evening that Justin Riemer, deputy secretary of the State Board of Elections, said the state Democratic party had certified Shuttleworth’s name. Riemer did not say …
