If you've swung past Hayfield Secondary School recently you have noticed the presence of a greenhouse, perennials and other nursery-related items in front of the school. That's Rorer's Produce, a staple of Route 1, selling flower and plants for all occasions. Rorer's didn't just pick the Hayfield parking lot at random to set up shop; they're donating a portion of every sale to the Hayfield Athletic Booseters and will continue to do so every day until Memorial Day.
This week's picture of the week is of the (soon-to-be) bridge along Gunston Road in Fort Belvoir that will span Route 1. On Tuesday night Lorton Patch was on hand as the 110-feet steel beams were lowered into place.
Anyone who has ever cast a line into water has a story about the one that got away. But if Mike Harley ever starts telling you about the time he caught a rare sturgeon in the Potomac, don't walk away. It's no fish story, as the pictures above illustrate. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, sturgeon have undergone remarkably little morphological change, indicating that their evolution has been exceptionally slow and earning them informal status as "living fossils."
The saying goes "April showers make May flowers," but given the amount of wet weather Lorton has had lately maybe that phrase should be moved back a month. In any event, Cherry Blossoms like the ones pictured above from last weekend should not be too far around the corner.
With husband Barry potentially being called halfway around the world at a moment's notice and as the mother of five, Amber Maham knows a thing or to about being organized. One of her secrets? A visual aid like the one pictured above. Read about the Mahams here.
Whether in black in white or in color, storm clouds were brewing above Lorton last Friday. These were shot off Hooes Road about a quarter of a mile north of Furnace Road. Of course, if you followed Lorton Patch on Facebook, you'd have seen these photos already.
The aftermath of an intentionally set fire at the Levelle W. Dupell Park left some sad images this week. Anyone with information regarding the incident should call the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department at 703-246-3801.
South County Secondary School student Liam MacDonald woke up Saturday morning and saw his front yard had been "flocked" with Pink Flamingos in celebration of his 18th birthday. No Liam had not been the victim of an MTV- style prank, but rather the beneficiary of a "Flocking." Flockings benefit the South County Secondary School PTSO's All Night Graduation Party. If you'd like to flock someone contact Nancy McKinnon at 703-690-8920 and nkmckinnon@msn.com or Vickey Jones at 703-690-9914 and tvrjones@msn.com. See the attached pdf. Be sure to let Lorton Patch know how it goes!
Each Thursday we'll publish a picture that captures Lorton in a way a thousand words never could. This one is of the five South County wrestlers who bagged district titles last weekend. Be sure to wish them luck as they head to regionals today.
Each Thursday we'll publish a picture that captures Lorton in a way a thousand words never could. This one is from Kim Campbell, who spotted a house--yes, a house--being towed along the Potomac. Send us your photo to be included in this space next week.
